Restoring Partial Backups

On managing conflicts, and the privacy of what is restored

With an ‘HXP’ file created earlier, you can visit your account’s data settings to restore ideas from the snapshot.

Tapping ‘Upload a snapshot’ will let you choose an HXP file for upload.

You’ll then see further details about the snapshot, and options for restoring it. When you want to restore, you can tap ‘Restore’ to continue, or ‘Not now’ to perhaps upload a different snapshot.

The options displayed will depend on the data being imported, as follows.

When a snapshot contains private playpens…

The default behavior, ‘Restore All’, is to restore with the same privacy. You can also ignore private playpens with ‘Restore None’, or publish them with ‘Publish’. If ‘Restore All’ is checked, you’ll need a premier subscription, or to upgrade before restoring.

There are caveats where playpens may be private in the snapshot but public in your profile. These are discussed below.

From a former subscription…

When recreating playpens, the default behavior is to create with the same privacy as they had when backed up. If you’re unsure whether some ideas should be public, and you have a Premier subscription, checking ‘Create as private’ will make all recreated playpens private.

From an earlier time with similar data…

When restoring from an earlier time, it’s possible for a restore to make changes to existing playpens. There are a few options to handle some special cases:

  • Ignore since-deleted ideas

When checked, ideas deleted since the snapshot will not be restored.

  • Snapshot overrides more recent edits

When checked, ideas edited since the snapshot will be overridden by the snapshot’s version.

Private in the snapshot, but public in your profile?

For the ideas in both your profile and the snapshot, the public playpen is updated using the private according to the other restore options. It remains public.

However, for ideas in the snapshot that were deleted since creating the snapshot, there is another relevant option for private-to-public conversions.

When ‘Ignore since-deleted ideas’ is not checked (and the private restore setting is ‘Restore All’ or ‘Publish’), the ‘Publish since-deleted ideas’ option needs some care:

  • If not checked (the default):

To give more control over when ideas are made public — avoiding surprises — a private playpen will be created to host the deleted ideas. As long as your subscription supports private playpens. Otherwise the deleted ideas are ignored.

  • When it is checked:

Formerly-private deleted content will be published immediately upon restore.

From a different account?

Backups provide a way to move ideas from one account to another. However, playpens may only be restored to their new account once they have been removed from the old.
