The Avatar & Finder-Slider

The find tool, which can be launched by sliding the finder icon (or, in Island View, the avatar) to the other side of the account pane, looks for text within in a loaded playpen or across loaded playpens.

When these docs discuss Search, however, it is referring to features for exploring concepts and links that are not already in a playpen.

Both find, and some search features, can be triggered via dragging the account pane icon.

When connected, and nothing is selected in Playpen View, dropping the avatar into the playpen serves a very different purpose: creating links between your profile and the content in its playpens.
